Why did Lucien start making brassieres? The story of a lingerie revolution, launched by an established Kyoto company.
Why did LECIEN start making bras in 1966?
—The quiet challenge of an old Kyoto establishment to create everyday beauty.
Bras offer comfort and support closest to the skin.
While they are now an everyday item that seamlessly integrates into our daily lives, there was a time when they were considered a somewhat special item, crafted by only a limited number of manufacturers.
In 1966, LECIEN, a company that had long pursued the beauty of lace, ventured into the new realm of innerwear for women. This marked the beginning of a small yet significant challenge for the long-established Kyoto company.
A future revealed only by thoroughly understanding materials.
LECIEN's origins trace back to 1933, when it was founded in Kyoto as a specialized lace trading company. As a company that understood delicate materials like "lace" to embellish women's clothing more deeply than anyone else, why did we begin producing three-dimensional innerwear such as bras? Behind this decision was a keen eye that quietly observed the changing times.
During the period of rapid economic growth in the 1960s, Japanese women's lifestyles dramatically shifted from traditional Japanese clothing to Western attire. As clothing changed, so did the awareness of the body's silhouette that supported it. With the diversification of fashion, innerwear like bras and girdles transformed from special occasion wear into "everyday necessities" for all women. We were quick to perceive the stirrings of this new era.
With pride and passion, onto the everyday stage.
At that time, the innerwear market was already experiencing remarkable growth, with leading manufacturers holding a dominant presence. Competitors were establishing themselves as luxury items primarily in department stores. However, LECIEN, entering the market in their wake, chose a different path. Instead of elegant, high-end venues, we opted for mass retailers, a stage closer to the daily lives of more women.
Our goal was not to offer luxury goods for special occasions, but to provide high-quality items that everyone could comfortably and casually choose for their everyday lives. This decision to "be close to everyday life" became the unwavering foundation of LECIEN's manufacturing, a principle that continues to guide us today.
60 years of earnestly considering "closest to the skin."
Nearly 60 years have passed since then.
Today's LECIEN bras have evolved significantly with the times, featuring intricate designs based on skeletal types and material development that minimizes skin stress. However, the underlying desire to "deliver comfort that genuinely satisfies as many women as possible" has not wavered since that day.
"To make as many women as possible beautiful and happy."
These words, enshrined in our philosophy, continue to quietly breathe life into every single product and every stitch we make.
